2012 Mayan End Of World Prediction: Prophecy? Fact? Fiction? Christian Opportunity?

The Mayans were not alone in their prediction of the end of the world. Edgar Casey, Nostradamus and even the Bible, all point to something happening in the near future. 2000 years ago the Mayans gave the exact time, which converted to our calender, points to December 21, 2012 at 11:11am
One of the reasons that many scientist do not quickly dismiss this date, is their respect for the Mayans. The Mayan calender is actually more accurate than the one used at this moment throughout our present world. An additional example of their amazing accomplishments, was the calculation of the time involved in a Lunar cycle all the way out to the 5 th decimal.
The interest in this topic, is so large that over a dozen books have been published, and if you Google the subject, you will find thousands of articles supporting this "doomsday" prediction. The point of this document, is that you have not seen anything yet. As we get closer to the predicted date, we should all expect something similar to the Y2K panic, but multiplied about a thousand times.
Fear is not always rational, but at least this one has some scientific facts at its base. One of the reasons that fear is going to be at a very high level, relates to other things going on. The earth appears to be warming, polar ice is melting, tensions seem to be rising between countries, and religions, and many people are in total fear about the future. Everyone of these events, makes a percentage of our population very receptive to the possibility of the world ending, especially when you realize the Mayans accurately predicted their own demise (literally down to the year) long before it happened.
As a Christian, I am not the least bit worried, but I do want to prepare each of us, for the opportunities that I believe are coming our way. As peoples fears multiply, many of them will become receptive to what Jesus has to offer. We and our churches must be prepared, and ready to deal with what could be the greatest opportunity of the last several hundred years.
I know that God does not "need" us to bring people to Christ, but he allows each of us opportunities to be used by him as a tool, I think that this will be one of the greatest of these moments, in our life time.
Tell me what you think, all advice and comments are appreciated.

More commentsWhat is the significance between the eons of prophesies announcing the coming of Christ 2009 years ago and the kinds of "prophesies" we hear today? What separates doomsday predictions in ancient times from predictions in modern times?
i read somewhere that before the end of time, christ will make himself known to this earth again. in religious terms, i am an athiest, and take a scientific approach to life, However, i dont agree that scientists know everything, and i believe that if the world is going to truly end, then the presence of god will be known, and only he can bring about an apocolypse.Personally, i feel that there mey be some truth in the mayan 2012 prediction, however i am not convinced it will be the destruction of the earth in the literal sense, but perhaps a significant event will take place that will change the view of the earth for the future.
End of the world is TRUTH. But there are two point of views.1) Religious.2) Scientific.1) Now If we talk about Religious DoomsDay, then the Judaism, the Christianity and the Islam all are having their own theories. Where every one gave the signs of Doomsday that would appear years before it happens. If all these religious people expect something like 2012 then they have to wait for all the signs to happen. And most of these signs are yet to come as every one who knows about his own religion, knows this fact. Then why fear, if you fear that means you dont have faith in your own religion.2) If science claims any "end of world" theory then it should have some strong reason why this would happen. And if we still say that some calendar of some group of people has predicted according to thier faiths, then I do not deviate their saying but that should not the end of the world for sure. It could be specific to region or a bit more than that.Sajjad Ali
1. while we will see signs of the end, Christ told his followers that it will come like a theif in the night, not even he nor the angels in heaven know the date, nor the hour. Only God the father knows. That is mentioned several times in the bible. To say God left a code that gave us the year and time, would be making Christ a liar... and we know Christ wasn't a liar.2. the mayans did NOT predict the end of the world. They didn't care about when the world would end. They believed when something is destroyed, or dies, it is reborn stronger. So if they'd be reborn, they didn't care about death or the end of the world. Their interest was cosmic and natural events like moon phases, star and planetary alignments and such.3. ok I'm only going to say this once. STOP SAYING NOSTRADAMUS PREDICTED 2012!!! this annoys me as it is simply lazy journalism.in letters to his son, he said his predictions were good through the year 3797 when he felt the world would fall into a dark age, and the end would come... he made no actual predictions about 2012 that can be verified. (just as predictions about 9/11 and Y2K were faked).4. The Mayans did NOT predict their own demise. When they were overtaken, the spaniards destroyed many doctuments the Mayans had created, so there is no actual evidence that they meant 2012 is the world's end, or that they actually predicted Cortez's coming.the main story is that they believed the white bearded God Quetzalcoatl, who visited them 52 years earlier, would return as promised. Cortez appeared 'around' this time (not on the exact date as claimed), when asked if he was the white God Quetzalcoatl, Cortez said "yes" to be accepted into the city.they predicted that a white God (who had visited them before) would return as promised. Cortez obviously had not visited them 50+ years prior, so they were not predicting Cortez, they were predicting the return of the god who previously visited them.Cortez came and they assumed he was the white god because of his appearance. He played into that assumption. They did not predict Cortez's coming... Cortez played into their belief of the white God returning, by pretending to be that white God.5. and lets remember 2 things... they believed in Lizard gods from outer space, and that the world was destroyed and reborn 4 times. the first time, all life on earth was eating by a Jaguar, who they later turned into a God.look, ask modern Mayans if their ancestors believed the world would end on December 21st of 2012, and they'll give you a weird look.here's some trivia I found when looking into the 2012 movie."The doomsday theory has sprung from a Western idea, not a Mayan. Mayans insist that the world will not end in 2012. The Mayans had a talent for astronomy, and enthusiasts have found a series of astronomical alignments they say coincide in 2012, including one that happens roughly only once every 25,800 years. Once every 25,800 years, the sun lines up with the center of our Milky Way galaxy on a winter solstice, the sun's lowest point in the horizon. The next time that will happen is on December 21, 2012; which happens to be the same day the Mayan calender expires. In addition to the Mayan calendar, the modern doomsday myth is bolstered several ostensibly scientific reasons for a disaster. Examples include a pole shift, the "return" of Planet X or the Sun's sinister counterpart Nemesis, a galactic, planetary, or other celestial alignment, global warming, global cooling, a massive solar flare, a new ice age, and so on. None of these have any basis in respected science. For example, the "galactic alignment" between the sun, Earth, and galactic center happens every December. The best alignment was reached in the 1990s and was accompanied by its own set of doomsday theories. Alignments since then have been increasingly poor."
What a pile of bunk. Anyone who is a true disciple of Christ will recognize that all those people like the Mayans and Nostradamus were deeply involved in the cult. When Christ returns, it will be exactly like he said. People will be saying, "Where is his coming? Everything has been going on since the creation of the world." That is obviously not the tone at the moment when many, especially unbelievers think that the end is at hand.
Until the time comes, no need to worry. Go on about your business and don't worry. Hold on tight to your loved ones and let nothing change your faith.

yes brother jef my self am very amzing with this issue because as i pass my bible i havent find a verse that explain the coming back of Jesus on that time since himself he had said that no one who know when i will return but only father now as Mayan ppl predict about that concern they mean Jesus will turn back on that tyme which it can not be...........so 4 myself i want to make you aware that let us prepare 4 meetn with our God but we should not fear MAY GOD BLESS YOU
That Mayan calendar stuff is just a lot of baloney. Yes, their calendar ended abruptly, but that's because they were all slaughtered. Here's some news for ya: the world will go on long past 2012.
no because a true believing christian knows by the bible only the father knows when the end comes not even the angels or the son so no this article does not help me because till god decides nothing will happen and i believe noone knows
